Filmmakers wind up
movie shoot here; Local folks, extras
'have been fantastic'
By KIP BURKE news editor
The cast and crew of the movie
"Deception" wrapped up shooting in rural
Wilkes County Tuesday, having enjoyed
Washington hospitality and cooperation
for some three weeks this summer.
"The town of Washington and all of the
people have been fantastic," said the
film's director and star Vianlix Mestey.
Vianlix, who is making her first
independent film, fell in love with
Washington from her first look on the
Holly Court Inn web site. "It was just
overwhelming how beautiful Washington
is, and how friendly the people are,"
she said last year on her first visit.
"They've done everything for us to make
this possible. I wanted to thank
everybody from the Mayor on down for
opening the doors of this town. I hope
our film shows the town's beauty and
history."
Producing a low-budget film is far
easier with the large number of
historically costumed extras available.
"The extras in their own costumes
brought the quality of the production up
a notch, for sure," Vianlix said.
"They're a wonderful asset."
She especially appreciates the help
given by Phil Rothman, who gave the film
crew the run of his inn for a while.
Much of the filming took place at Holly
Court Inn, the Rothmans' historic
bed-and-breakfast inn on South Alexander
Street. "Phil has been wonderful," she
said, "such a good host and his home is
just beautiful."
Neighbors adjusted to the occasional
requirement for the closing of South
Alexander Avenue and Liberty Street, and
city officials and police have been most
helpful, she said. "Everything we've
asked for has been given." Watching the
movie company set up shots under the
shade of giant oaks in their park-like
front yard, Susan Abramson said she
hoped that other film companies would
find Washington and Wilkes County.
"I hope movie people can see how
wonderful Wilkes County is for
filmmaking," she said. "We've got the
infrastructure, we've got all these
costumed local extras, and we've got
made-to-order locations with these
beautiful old homes, both in town and in
the country."
With the filming wrapped up, the movie
will now go into post-production to
produce a finished film. Scott Schneider
said that when the film is ready to be
seen, they'd like to have the premier
here in Washington next summer. "We want
to premier the movie here to thank you
all for your help," he said.

'Deception' continues
shooting with little disruption of
traffic...
Parts of Washington and Wilkes County
again become a movie location this week
and next, and as before, drivers will be
inconvenienced with road and street
closing as filming for "Deception" runs
through July 31.
Traffic will be detoured around the
Mestey Films Productions locations to
keep the sounds of modern traffic from
becoming part of the film, which is set
in 1850. The bulk of the production of
"Deception" will take place at Holly
Court Inn on South Alexander Avenue,
where the movie company filmed last
summer, and the Abramson home on Newtown
Road.
Newtown Road will be closed most of the
day Friday and Saturday, July 27 and 28.
Flagmen will control traffic on the
Newtown Road between Jane Hill Road and
the Martin Echols Road as the movie
production company films scenes at the
home of Doug and Susan Abramson.
South Alexander Avenue and East Liberty
Street will be closed as the production
will return to Holly Court this week
with closings on Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday from 9:30 to 3 p.m.
Residents in the area of South Alexander
Avenue and East Liberty Street have been
given the filming schedule to know when
their streets will be closed to traffic.
Some days will see only a brief
interruption in traffic, while other
days will see the streets closed most of
the day. Detours will be marked to take
traffic around the area.
Extras for the movie are requested to
report at 9 a.m. Saturday Saturday July
28.
There will be a Meet and Greet with the
cast on Sunday afternoon, July 29, from
noon to 3 p.m.

Washington/Wilkes; auditions for extras
set for Tuesday 7-9 p.m.
Local acting hopefuls
get one more chance to audition for the

later this month, as citizens prepare
for a little inconvenience with roads
and streets closed for the filming.
Auditions for parts
as non-paid extras will be held Tuesday,
July 17, from 7-9 p.m. at the Mary
Willis Library. Anyone who auditioned
last year will not need to audition

Friday, July 27.
Those auditioning
should wear period costume circa 1850.
Men's costumes must be civilian.

Filming will start
next Thursday, July 19, and continue on
through July 31. Traffic will be
detoured around the production locations
to keep the sounds of modern traffic
from becoming part of the film, which is
set in 1850.
Residents in the area
of South Alexander Avenue and East
Liberty Street have been given the
filming schedule to know when their

Movie Finishes First Days of Local
Filming; Locals Lined Up for April
Production
Movie production
company MESTEY Films Productions has
finished the first portion of
filming its movie "DECEPTION"
on location in Washington and Wilkes
County, and has lined up local
extras with historical costumes for
the second filming in April.
Vianlix Mestey-Schneider
and her sister, Vivian Mestey-Wolfe,
set up auditions Friday evening and
met some of the dozens of
historically costumed Wilkes County
extras experienced in portraying the
Civil War era. The extras will take
part in the second session of
filming next spring, when the movie
company will return to film more
outdoor scenes at Holly Court Inn.
This weekend was full
with filming and preparations
running from early in the morning
until late at night, said assistant
director James Johnson. With a tight
schedule for the four-day shoot,
actors and crew filmed both indoors
and outdoors at Holly Court, then
went to film outdoors at the Wilkes
County home of Doug and Susan
Abramson. "The Abramsons' place had
nice, wide-open spaces we needed,"
Johnson said.
The cast and crew
filled the Holly Court Inn bed and
breakfast, with owners Phil and
Margaret Rothman feeding and tending
to their many needs.
A
portion of South Alexander Avenue
and a block of Liberty Street was
partially blocked during the filming
to keep the sound of traffic from
disrupting the filming.
When the production
company returns in the spring, they
will need to cover those streets
with dirt to simulate 19th century
plantation Virginia, and will then
make use of the costumed extras they
auditioned last week.
"Everyone has been
great here, so friendly. We can't
wait to come back in the spring,"
Mestey-Schneider said. "Washington
is a wonderful place to make a
movie."

Movie Maker Looking for Costumed
Extras; "DECEPTION" Auditions Friday
Eve at Library
The dozens of
Washington-Wilkes folks who've
portrayed historic characters
at historic events now have a chance
to act for a wider audience. The
maker of the film "DECEPTION"
is looking for extras in 1850 period
costume to work over the next few
days, then again in the spring.
Dozens of experienced
historic extras are expected for
open auditions to be held Friday
evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Mary
Willis Library. "It's not for pay,"
said Vianlix Mestey-Schneider, of
Mestey Films Productions, "just for
fun - but what an experience!"
The movie production
company will be filming next week at
Holly Court, Phil and Margaret
Rothman's bed-and-breakfast inn on
South Alexander Avenue. Vianlix says
that the crew and actors will return
in the spring to complete filming.
Washington and Wilkes
County has a built-in cast of
authentically costumed extras,
veterans of "Postmarked Wilkes
County," the only outdoor production
in Georgia, and of living history
exhibits at Callaway Plantation, the
Robert Toombs House, and both the
Spring and Christmas Tour of Homes.
The combination of
extras with their own authentic
costumes, and historic homes and
sites, make Washington an ideal
place to film a historic drama,
Vianlix said.
She says she fell in
love with Washington from her first
look on the Holly Court Inn web
site. "It was just overwhelming how
beautiful Washington is, and how
friendly the people are. They've
done everything for us to make this
possible."
The auditions at the
Mary Willis Library will open at 6
p.m. Friday evening. "Please come in
costume," Vianlix said. "We are
looking for ladies in 'Southern
belle' costume and men in Southern
civilian attire, and everyone is
welcome."

Independent Film May
Lead to Greater Things!
By Kip Burke
For the first time in
years, a movie is going
to filmed in Washington,
starting this summer.
And, although it's not a
big Hollywood
production, a small
independent movie could
lead to other movie
companies discovering
that Washington,
Georgia, is the perfect
Southern small-town
movie set - complete
with costumed extras.
"We'll be arriving
August 12, and we'll
film from August 13
through 16," said
Vianlix Mestey-Schneider
(just say Vee-on-licks),
the independent film
maker, producer, and
writer of
"DECEPTION." The
company will be filming
at Holly Court Inn, the
historic
bed-and-breakfast inn of
Philip and Margaret
Rothman on South
Alexander Street.
"Then we'll be back in
April 2007, and that's
when the really big
production is coming.
We'll need extras and
horses then," she said.
"This is a good thing,"
said Mayor Willie Burns.
"It's a great
opportunity for us to
benefit, and if this
goes well, I look for
Washington to flourish
as a small-town movie
location."
He pointed out that
Washington and Wilkes
County had a built-in
cast of authentically
costumed extras,
veterans of "Postmarked
Wilkes County," the only
outdoor production in
Georgia.
Dozens of others have -
for years - been in
costume and in character
at the Spring Tour of
Homes, the Christmas
Tour, and at living
history events at
Callaway Plantation, the
Robert Toombs House, and
the Washington
Historical Museum.
"We've been doing the
dramas, we've got the
history, we've got a
beautiful downtown,
beautiful homes," said
Burns. "We're ripe for
the movies to come
here."
Vianlix, who is making
her first independent
film, fell in love with
Washington from her
first look on the Holly
Court Inn web site. "It
was just overwhelming
how beautiful Washington
is, and how friendly the
people are. They've done
everything for us to
make this possible."
That especially includes
Phil Rothman, who will
be giving the film crew
the run of his inn for a
while. "I know
independent film is a
gamble, but I really
feel like I'm making a
contribution to the
arts," he said. Although
he hopes for some
exposure for his Holly
Court Inn, he sees that
the whole town can gain
if it capitalizes on the
opportunity.
Efforts have already
begun, said Payroll
Development Authority
Executive Director David
Jenkins. "First, the
movie gets us on the map
as a movie location," he
said. "Having one
success will allow us to
market to Georgia's Film
Office as well as to
film location
consultants."
Second, he said,
production of the movie
is spurring
Washington-Wilkes to
better organize all the
resources a film company
can find here. 'The
Chamber of Commerce is
learning to help with
organizing extras,"
Jenkins said, "and we're
better describing all
the characters, props,
and costumes we have.
And we're developing a
film web page. All of
these are important to
have when the next film
consultant visits
Washington-Wilkes."
"To have a film made
here is going to be a
cornerstone to help
attract attention from
that industry," Rothman
said. "It doesn't have
to be Gone With The
Wind, but we have
to start somewhere, and
once we've started, to
promote it, and invest
in it."
